*Editor’s note: The July 1 edition of the Leander Ledger included a headline stating the station opening is July 3, which is incorrect; the opening is July 10. We regret the error.

The Leander Fire Department is throwing a party to celebrate the completion of Fire Station No. 3 July 10. LFD is inviting the community to the new facility — which features the fire station, training offices, classrooms and a training tower — Saturday to watch demonstrations and tour the new digs.
The facility was funded in the 2006 bond election, but the original design was more than the city budgeted for so the city decided to construct it as a design-build. The city selected Jamail & Smith Construction to undertake the project.
“We recommended changes to the structural building envelope, the site work, air conditioning, electrical system, plumbing and interior finishes that shaved $1.5 million off the project cost,” said Jamail & Smith Vice Presdent Darrell Smith. “By altering material selections, adjusting site grading and framing the facility conventionally versus using a propriety system, we were able to give the city exactly what they envisioned for the right price without sacrificing quality.”
Attendees at the grand opening will be able to watch demonstrations and tour the station, as well as enjoy hot dogs with the fire department and fellow community members. The facility is located next to the Leander Police Station at Sonny Drive and U.S. 183. The facility is 16,000 square feet, and the city was proud to point out it was completed on time and under budget.
