Austin Community College closed on its Leander land purchase this week.

On May 11, according to Ben Ferrell, ACC’s executive vice president of finance and administration, ACC closed on the real estate deal with RB 270 Partnership for 100 acres.

The land is located between U.S. Highway 183 and the toll road 183A next to the Capital Metro Park and Ride station.

“We’re glad to be in Leander,” Ferrell said. “It’s a great location with transportation; this is good.”

Ferrell said ACC is updating its facilities master plan and the Leander land purchase is one of several land banking and annexation deals happening this year.

The ACC board of trustees has identified four additional areas of possible expansion of its service area besides Leander: Bastrop, Elgin, Kyle/Buda and San Marcos.

Pix Howell, Leander’s urban affairs officer, said having an ACC Leander campus would benefit the city.

“We know that they’re going to be there as an accelerator for things around it,” he said. “It will create bigger opportunities for those around there.”

The land is located within the area known as the Transit Oriented Development, which has not seen much development in the last few years.

The city and land owners have partnered together and additional roads will be built, beginning this year.

ACC’s land, once the new roads are built, will have frontage along Mel Mathis Ave, Hero Way and the toll road, Howell said.

“I’ve always been a big proponent of them doing a project near rail,” Howell. “Two things that should be located near rail are hospitals and education. “We’re thrilled that they agreed in this particular case.”

Ferrell said the ACC board of trustees will review the updates to the facilities master plan, which was adopted in 2007, before deciding what will be done in the coming year.

No timeline has been set for construction of any of the campuses, Ferrell said.
